Media Center PC update to resolve unexpected shutdowns for HP Media Center 884n This update resolves an issue on Media Center PCs with an Intel Hyperthreaded Processor that causes the Media Center Console to close unexpectedly.­ Symptoms of this issue include the following: An error message stating that the "ehshell.­exe" application has generated an exception that could not be handled.­ Application buttons missing from the Media Center Console window.­ Video stops functioning.­ A message asking whether you want send Microsoft information about an error caused by the "ehshell.­exe" application.­ Fixes: This update resolves an issue on Media Center PCs with an Intel Hyperthreaded Processor.­ (Not all Media Center PCs contain an Intel Hyperthreaded Processor.­) Prerequisites: You may need to install a Microsoft update before using this Media Center update.­ While following the steps listed below,­ if you get an error message indicating that the update "cannot verify the integrity of the file UPDATE.­INF,­" go to Microsoft's Web site for Windows Updates and find and install the Microsoft Critical Update Q817287.­ After the Microsoft update is installed,­ start the steps listed below again.­ How To Use: 1.­ Download the Media Center /­ Hyperthreaded CPU update.­ 2.­ Double-click the icon for the update file downloaded in step 1.­ 3.­ After reading the introduction screen,­ click NEXT.­ 4.­ Accept the terms in the HP license agreement,­ and click NEXT.­ 5.­ A warning screen appears advising you to obtain and install Microsoft Critical Update Q817287 from the Microsoft Windows Update site if this update fails due to an error verifying the integrity of the file UPDATE.­INF.­ Click OK to continue.­ 6.­ Click NEXT.­ 7.­ Accept the terms in the Microsoft license agreement,­ and click NEXT.­ 8.­ When the setup wizard finishes,­ click FINISH to restart the PC and continue.­ If you had previously been instructed to disable Hyperthreading in the system BIOS menus as a workaround for this issue,­ you can enable Hyperthreading again after applying this Media Center update.­ To enable Hyperthreading: 1.­ Restart the PC.­ 2.­ Press F11 as soon as the blue HP logo screen appears.­ (You have only a few seconds to press the F11 key before startup continues.­) The Entering SETUP message appears and the BIOS screen opens.­ 3.­ Navigate to the Power menu.­ 4.­ Select ENABLE for the CPU Hyperthreading option.­ 5.­ Save and exit the BIOS.­ Compatible devices: DF205A
